Language is considered the greatest asset of all peoples, whether indigenous or not, given the cultural values rooted in customs and traditions. Language serves as the foundation of communication among all human beings, nations, tribes, and communities worldwide.
This booklet, experimental in nature, was developed and organized as pedagogical support material to assist classroom teachers of the Macuxi Indigenous People in helping children who are still in the process of literacy in the Macuxi Language. The development of skills such as observation, imagination, listening, speaking, and reading in a playful and interactive way, in addition to fostering the creation of narratives and textual productions in various genres, strengthens the learner's confidence in speaking in public, and enhances textual production and linguistic and semiotic analysis based on their experiences and knowledge. Munduruku (2009) describes these experiences and prior knowledge of the child as:
[...] "property" of everyone, so that many people help take care of them. The mother takes the child everywhere: to the forest, the fields, when she goes to collect fruits or harvest cassava; when she goes to the river to fetch water or bathe; when she goes for a walk around the village; when she goes to chat with friends. Children are raised in great freedom, without any imposition. [...] As they grow up, they are asked to accompany their parents in small activities, which helps them recognize the environment in which they live. In this way, they develop their geographic perception, their mastery of the environment. They learn to hunt, fish, plant, make straw baskets, or ceramic pots. They become more familiar with the forest, the rivers, the hunting paths (MUNDURUKU, 2009, p.75).
This "property" described by Munduruku (1990) is strongly present in this pedagogical edition, which is the result of a Linguistic Project developed in the Continuing Education Course called "Linguistic Structure of the Macuxi Language - Muru’muruta." This course was created by Professor Sobral André and was aimed at Macuxi Indigenous Language Teachers working in various indigenous communities throughout our state of Roraima. This Continuing Education Course took place at the State Center for the Training of Education Professionals in Roraima – CEFORR, and its objective was the development and production of images and texts based on Semiotics (JAKOBSON, 1963), with the participants telling stories from their original communities and, from these experiences, creating new tales, images, and symbolic elements essential to language. Our objectives include providing new learning experiences that are rich and meaningful for Macuxi Language teachers, among which are:
- Developing linguistic, semiotic, and textual skills;
- Integrating oral and written traditions into educational practices;
- Strengthening cultural identity and valuing ancestral roots;
- Promoting culture and personal and indigenous identity through the symbolism of graphic art; and
- Deepening the teaching skills of bilingual language and sciences.
This Didactic Proposal is organized into 5 sections:
- Part - Story in images: language as a link;
- Part - Basic concepts of the Macuxi Language, vowels;
- Part - Basic concepts of the Macuxi Language, consonants;
- Part - Integrating activities in Macuxi Language and Mathematics;
- Part - Integrating activities in Macuxi Language and Science.
We consider this booklet not as a goal achieved, but as a starting point for what we aspire to in the Macuxi Linguistic field: the linguistic and cultural preservation of an entire people. Regarding the transcriptions in this proposal, they closely follow those written in the original version, which were handwritten by the course participants during the Muru’muruta course. It is important to mention that, for the final writing of this booklet, there is a linguistic consensus among all the course participants of the Muru’muruta course, who teach in schools located in the savannah and mountainous regions of Roraima, and who reached an agreement for the completion of this work.
